| Acupuncture During Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond |
|
Pregnancy is an amazing time during a woman’s life. There is nothing quite like watching your belly grow, feeling those first little flutters and kicks, and the excitement and wonder that ensues. Some women breeze through pregnancy without so much as a niggle and others can find it a little more challenging both physically and mentally. The effort it can take to grow that magical bump, plus continue on with the demands of “normal life” (work, families, etc.) can take its toll in many ways, bringing about pain, discomfort and other complaints. Acupuncture may be able to offer some relief to some these pregnancy related conditions. Many women opt to come regularly (every few weeks or months) throughout their pregnancy. We recommend to come weekly from about 36-37 weeks for a series of treatments we call “pre birth acupuncture”. We know there are many things a woman can do leading up to their due date to help influence a better birth outcome. During these sessions, we chat to you about the type of birth you are hopeful for, and along with the acupuncture, can offer suggestions and advice that may assist you towards a better birth for you and your baby. Many women can find the final weeks of a pregnancy stressful, along with the possibility of a looming medical induction perhaps and the myriad of aches and pains that may present at this time. Women are constantly commenting how much they look forward to the sessions as a place to zone out, relax and connect with their baby in these final weeks. Often you are shown some acupressure points to continue the treatment at home, as well as points that may be useful during the birth. We love seeing new mums back in the clinic for a restorative post birth acupuncture session (newborns are most welcome!). The many months of growing and then birthing your baby is a marathon effort, (not to mention the subsequent feeding and caring of a newborn!). It is a time of intense change and learning for everyone. Post birth sessions focus on restoring and replenishing your body’s qi/energy to help you cope better with this demanding time.
